With customer, proven capabilities, the Ciena Packet Networking team is enhancing and advancing Carrier Ethernet, Routing and MPLS capabilities to take advantage of worldwide market opportunities as Service Providers virtualize their networks, unify their legacy networks, and prepare for 5G.
We’re looking for an experienced, motivated, and talented individual interested in progressing their career in advanced L2/IP/MPLS switching features, while learning to leverage the disruption taking place with SDN, NFV and virtualized routing systems. You will take an experienced and influential role contributing to advancing next generation L2/IP/MPLS capabilities focused on service provider, carrier grade capability, scale, and reliability.
What will you do at Ciena?
- Contribute to design and development of Layer 2 control protocol features and capabilities. L2 control protocols include 802.1ab LLDP, LACP, 803.3ah EFM, 802.1ag CFM, Y.1731, IGMP Snooping, G.8032 ERPS, XSTP etc.
- Participate in software design, development, validation, and defect resolution activities to deliver functionally excellent products to Ciena’s customers.
- Provide basic assessment of own work including effort estimation and status reporting.
- Trouble shoot and fix reported issues. Identify root cause, diagnose, debug and deliver robust timely fixes.
- Continuous learning and development of skills in L2/IP/MPLS control plane development and network virtualization.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in computer science or a related discipline. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effectively able to collaborate with multiple teams across geographically diverse areas.

Required Skills:
Excellent “C” programming skills with strong debugging and trouble shooting skills over Linux platform. Excellent understanding of Ethernet, VLAN and L2 switching is required. Exposure to L2 control protocols (e.g. LLDP, LACP, IGMP, CFM, Y.1731, G.8032 ERPS, 802.3ah EFM, XSTP etc.) is desired. Familiarity with Broadcom XGS/DNX family of switches is a bonus. Exposure to debug tools (e.g. GDB), test tools (e.g. Ixia/Spirent) and configuration management (e.g. Perforce/Git) is required. Exposure to end-to-end feature development including CLI, SNMP/Netconf, inter module/thread communication, protocol state machine. Familiarity with product cycles and deployment requirements for carrier class products in service provider customer environment. Self-starter with a strong “can do” belief, who can work in a dynamic environment with little supervision.
